13th National Agriculture Fair

BACKGROUND

The theme for the 13th National Agriculture Fair is “Climate Smart Agriculture.” The rationale behind the theme is that with the prevailing uncertain climate changes in Malawi and the rest of the world, there is need for an approach that would help to guide actions needed to transform and reorient agricultural systems to effectively support development and ensure food security. There is also need to identify agricultural strategies suitable to our conditions here in Malawi. Climate Smart Agriculture aims to tackle three main objectives: sustainable increase of agricultural productivity and incomes; adapting and building resilience to climate change; and/or removing greenhouse gas emissions, where possible. Thus with this focus, short and long term agricultural development priorities in the face of climate change are achievable.

Players in the agricultural value chain present at the fairs include those in agriculture research, input suppliers, producers, processors, buyers and service providers who bring different exhibits. With improvements taking place with time, the allocation of the stands has come to be based on this value chain.

There are also a number of workshops organised during the fair with the aim of providing a forum for sharing information and experiences on issues affecting the sector. The seminars are led by experts who handle particular issues affecting the value chain in Malawi.

Participants are also given an opportunity to meet players in the value chain for possible business deals, joint ventures, memorandum of understanding or other agreements.

BENEFITS

The rationale for holding the National Agriculture Fair remains to reduce the transaction costs of stakeholders in the agricultural value chain. By congregating together all the players in the value chain, the costs of accessing information, markets, technology, inputs, advisory services, and finance are reduced because these goods and services are all placed under one roof. Instead of making specific journeys to get a service from a particular player, a participant or a patron gets everything in one place.

·         The participants at the Fair also exchange good practices in the sector. They learn from each other on how best to improve their various activities.

·         The fair is also meant to expose farmers/ farmer groups to new developments in technologies, markets, and financial arrangements, and other services. This will aid Malawi to produce more and cheaply and be competitive on the international market

·         The fair is meant to create demand for agricultural commodities resulting in linkages in the form of contracts such as supply contracts and/or farming contracts are consummated for the smallholder farmers.

·         Through the fair, Government supports productivity of smallholder farmers through the formation of cooperatives to enable them enhance skills that would enable them compete in the market

·         It is a platform of disseminating information on right technologies for processing and adding value to agricultural produce to reduce post-harvest losses and enable Malawian products fetch high prices on the international market.
